I've never seen an ominous mountain range stylized with jewel-like objects before. It's a wildly unique idea to me, as is your use of a blue-green color to fill in some of the middle. It's hard to decide if the orange decoration represents magma or just the sunset. The more I look at it, it's hard to decide if this background is really that ominous at all. I probably wouldn't even think about it if not for the sad emotion you placed in the eyes of the parent. If the midair feathers are the result of a recent tragedy (assuming they're not from the bird we see), it seems as though the "single" status of the title has just begun. The bird could look anywhere, but chooses to look at feathers floating in the darkness.
Perhaps the lack of connection between the foreground and the background could be interpreted as a visual metaphor representing the sudden isolation felt by this lone parent. And the line formed by the feathers in midair is all that visually and emotionally connects this family to the wider world. Perhaps the division created by the large shadow symbolizes the animal thinking about the past, where the nest and feathers are in the present and the glowing landscape above represents an idealized view of someplace in the past. Such a point could be emphasized further by including a faint rendering of two birds flying side-by-side way off in the distant sky, quietly symbolizing the happier days of companionship and adventure.
I have never seen you convey "despair" so effectively as you have here. This is good, and it says good things about your future endeavors. Not only can you produce extraordinary works with your own breathtaking signature style and the dynamic composition arrangement of an artistic genius, but you have the capacity to tell a story that conveys actual emotional depth with just one image. Increasingly, your work gives us a rare glimpse into a new reality, a new frontier of expression that you are quickly mastering, lighting and sketching the way for others to follow. Your works are art because you can't help yourself. They are purely you and are such a wonderful gift to us all here on dA. Thank you so much for sharing your creative efforts. May your art inspire many hearts for the rest of your days and beyond.
I really like the way the black in the foreground emphasizes the parrot in her nest. The expression is wonderful, and the few little feathers really create a great feeling. The mountains and sunset in the background, are of course, wonderful as always.
